Fine Gael now has an overwhelming majority on Mayo County Council following last Friday’s Local Elections. With 17 seats on the local authority, Enda Kenny’s crew will occupy the chairmanship of the council for the next five years with Ballyhaunis native John Cribbin tipped to be installed as the first Cathaoirleach.

Now it’s down to the real business

There are many rumblings in the aftermath of the Local Elections as to the internal health of Fine Gael in east and north Mayo and recent mayoral and cathaoirleach elections are adding to the ether.

On Thursday September 10 at 7pm Cathaoirleach Cllr John Cribbin will launch Mayo County Council’s Culture Night Brochure. The launch will take place in Mayo County Library and all are welcome to come along. Entertainment on the evening will be provided by Mayo Arts Squad.

The new Kennedy terminal (named after Joe Kennedy, former chairman and honorary president of Ireland West Knock airport’s board of directors) was officially opened by Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey last Friday. The Minister spoke with optimism about the future of an airport which was founded on an “impossible dream” which has become a successful reality.

Figures released by Mayo County Council under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that Mayo county councillors were paid out €836,212 from January to the end of June 2009, all relating to the six months pre-election. Independent Castlebar Councillor Frank Durcan who sought this information said that these figures are “immoral in the times that are in it”.
